Derivativ

Derivativ.net is a social network website for collaborative storytelling. Users can start a new stories or add to an existing ones. A new story is created when a user creates the 1st segment of it. Then anybody else can “reply” to that with their own segment. Segments are going to be limited in size. Any segment can have multiple “replies”. This gives any story on the site a tree-like architecture that users can browse.

Each segment of a story can be rated by users so that an “optimal” path can be created through the story. However, users are not required to follow that optimal path, they can choose their own. A segment of a story can become inactive if it is unpopular and is not “replied” to but can be awakened if somebody decides to “reply” to it.

Stories can consist of text/images or videos. Text and images can be combined in the same segment. But text/images cannot be mixed with videos. So, for example, a story that started as a video has to be replied to with videos, a story that started as text has to be replied to with either text, image or combination of the two.

The social aspect of the site is created through the use of profiles. On the members’ profiles you’ll be able to find what stories they contributed to or what stories they started, their friends, favorites etc. Users can add stories to their favorites. By favoring a story at a point anywhere in it besides its start, the site will save your path through the story so that anyone that clicks on your favorite knows the path that you’ve taken through the story.

Segments flagged for inappropriate content would then be subject to review and (possible) deletion or editing. Users that continually get flagged will have permissions taken away from them. Conversely, users that continually flag content that is not inappropriate will have permissions taken away from them.
